Begin your tour either at the Buchenparkhalle car park or at the Erbgericht bus stop in Hinterhermsdorf, near the Haus des Gastes. From the bus stop it is still one and a half kilometres of asphalt road through the beautiful town up to the Buchenparkhalle – in the end there is a steep section that can be handled with a little bit of support. The access to the Waldhusche outdoor compound leads over a small curb. Now keep to the right and follow the path down to Beizehaus. Shortly before getting there mmove downhill via a few corners along partly grassy paths. The exhibition in the Beizehaus is free of charge during the season’s opening hours and is worth a visit – also for children.
After your visit of the exhibition head back to the entrance to Waldhusche from where a loop track will take you straight to the other stopping points of the Waldhusche. Follow the red signposts. The route consists mostly of bound, small gravel with occasional sandy, but solid spots. Past the children’s play area including the cobweb and longicorn stopping point you will reach the large junction in the heart of the compound. After visiting the stops on the historical forest use follow the blue and green signposts toward the Aschehübel entrance. On a paved forest road continue through the peaceful forest of Hinterhermsdorf. Keep left behind the entrance and follow the road up through the forest and back to the Buchenparkhalle. An exact map including the adventure stopping points can be found below.
A small hint: From here it is not far to the Upper Sluice. The tour description can be found here.
The inconspicuous “Birngrün” or “serrated wintergreen” (Orthilia secunda) grows directly near one of the tracks through the Waldhusche which is the only known place for it to grow in the entire national park area! Those who are unaware may not notice this rare marvel (see picture gallery above). But those who do appreciate such rarity, will find it easier to adhere to our noational park on-track-restrictions. A few steps off-track would quickly destroy half the population of this wintergreen …
As its name suggests, this little plant retains its green leaves throughout the winter. It is a heather plants and blooms in whitish-green colours in the summer.
