Delicious smells rise from the Christmas market on cold winter days and in the summer the casemates of the fortress offer some refreshing coolness. The Königstein Fortress is open all year round.
The barrier-free access to the fortress is only possible via the large lift at the main entrance. You can get there by bus line 241. A few times a day this does not go directly from Pirna to Hinterhermsdorf or Bad Schandau, but it makes a little detour to the foot of the fortress at the main entrance. If you choose to arrive via S-Bahn you should consider that the ascent to the fortress is very steep and partly over uneven ground. We strongly recommend a strong person to assist you.

The entire architecture of this fortress is remarkable, but the interior wall of the 152.5 m deep well is not only an example of prime craftsmanship of former wells, but also a special feature from a conservation perspective: The maidenhair spleenwort has chosen this place as its home for its ideal conditions. In Saxony this type of fern is an endangered species.
