Breaking: Closure of all forest areas between Bastei, Rathen, Hohnstein and Polenztal from 1 August

A heavy storm in the late afternoon of July 31st, 2026 has caused massive damage on forest trees in the National Park forestry district Hohnstein. Extreme squalls caused trees to be uprooted, broken or damaged. To guarantee the safety of all citizens and visitors, it is now strictly forbidden to enter the affected forest areas around the Amselgrun between Bastei, Rathen, Hohnstein and the Polenztal. Because many trails are currently entirely blocked by fallen trees, it is not yet possible to fully assess the situation. In addition to uprooted and broken trees, loose branches in the treetops as well as unstable, leaning trees pose an unpredictable risk. There is a danger to life!

The National Park and Forest Administration Saxon Switzerland together with the administrative district office Sächsische Schweiz – Osterzgebirge and the local communes appeals to residents and visitors to adhere to the closures under all circumstances and asks everyone to avoid the affected area and respect barrier tape, warnings and the information given by rangers.

Due to the great extent of the damage, clearing the affected areas will take a while. As soon as the trails are cleared and there is no more acute danger, we will inform about the forest closure being lifted.
