Geocaching

in the Saxon Switzerland National Park region

Nature-friendly scavenger hunt: Numerous caches are waiting to be discovered in the Saxon Switzerland National Park region. However, planning and participation are subject to a few important restrictions in order to protect nature and ensure that all visitors can enjoy themselves.

Permit requirement for new geoacaches

Important: Creating and publishing new geocaches in the Saxon Switzerland National Park region requires the approval of the Saxon Switzerland National Park and Forestry Administration. We only approve geocaches that are environmentally friendly. Please contact the responsible reviewer in advance – they will coordinate with us. Geocaches that are placed without prior consultation and violate the protection regulations must be removed by us.

Nature-friendly search

We understand anyone who wants to search for new caches while hiking, cycling or climbing. It allows for a very special experience of nature and requires particular focus on the natural environment surrounding the cache. However, please ensure that you behave in an environmentally friendly and considerate manner during your search. This includes, among other things:

  • Only directly on and next to the path: Suitable hiding places are located directly on or next to the path. You do not need to leave the paths to search. Avoid locations that could disturb animals or sensitive habitats.
  • No climbing: Approved caches are within easy reach of the path – climbing is not necessary. This protects valuable rock biotopes and reduces damage from trampling.
  • Respect nature: Search for caches without damaging plants. Heather, blueberries, ferns and mosses do not want to be trampled on either.
  • Animals have priority: Do not disturb animals' nesting and resting places and behave quietly during your search to protect wildlife. Avoid searching for caches in caves or openings in trees, on or in dead wood, in nesting sites, in deep crevices or in moorland areas, including bodies of water. Approved caches are located far away from sensitive habitats. These are refuges for rare and protected animal species – even minor disturbances can have serious consequences.
  • No night-time caches: Nature needs peace and quiet at night. Many animals rest at dusk and during the night, while others want to forage for food undisturbed. During this sensitive time, disturbances caused by searching can have a significant impact on the animals.

Organised caching events

If you're planning an organised geocaching event, you are required to register it beforehand.

Special features in the national park

What needs to be considered?

Saxon Switzerland National Park attracts many visitors and, as a large protected area, is home to unique flora and fauna. To ensure that everyone can continue to enjoy the beautiful landscape and nature in the future, a few special rules apply.

Wegegebot
Stay on trail

Visitors have to remain on the designated paths throughout the national park in order to protect flora and fauna and prevent erosion damage. Please also respect the boundaries at the viewing points. Please note: Only marked paths or paths indicated by signposts may be used in the core zone of the national park.

Müll
Leave no trace

Take your trash back to the next recycling bin, including tissues.

Feuer verboten
Don't light fires

Smoking and any type of fire, including camping stoves, are prohibited. Campfires are only permitted at the designated fireplaces. Forest fires endanger both our nature and the people living in the region.

Leinenzwang
Keep your dog on a leash

Always keep your dog on a leash. This protects local wildlife as well as your dog. Not all trails are suitable for dogs, please research before your trip.

Camping Zelten verboten
No camping

Sleeping or camping in the national park is prohibited, this also includes sleeping in your caravan or car. The only exception is Boofen (bivouac under a rock overhang without a tent or tarp), which is only permitted from 16 June to 31 January, only for climbing and only in the official Boofen sites.

Dtp dronesmodelplanes forbidden regular RED
No drones

The use of drones or other aircraft is prohibited throughout the national park.

Baden Schwimmen verboten
Don't enter water

It is forbidden for people and animals to enter the water or swim in the national park.

Working together for responsible behaviour

Geocaching in protected areas requires clear rules – and consideration. By behaving mindfully, you are helping to ensure that this leisure activity can continue to be enjoyed in harmony with nature in the future. Thank you very much!
